Raqs Sharqi is Arabic for West Asian/North African (Middle Eastern) Dance, which includes many styles. The term "Belly Dance" is a Western commercial label that refers to only one style.
The mission of Yasmina Ramzy Arts (formerly Arabesque), since 1987, has been to promote awareness of and further the artistry of Raqs Sharqi and Arabic music, while shedding light on and fostering an understanding of a culture often misrepresented. Since 2020, when the company began creating films, its mission has expanded to encompass diversity across gender identity, race, (dis)abilities, age, size, sexual orientation, dance, and music forms.
